Achieving Global Success With Live Chat

Zopim 2

Zopim is the developer of an award-winning live chat widget frequently utilised by businesses to augment their online customer service support.

Founded in 2007 by NUS students Royston Tay (Faculty of Engineering), Wu Wenxiang (School of Computing), Kwok Yang Bin (Faculty of Engineering), Julian Low (Faculty of Science) and Qing-Ru Lim (Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences), the idea for the company originated a year earlier, while the first four were on the NUS Overseas College Programme in Silicon Valley. Encouraged by meeting and pitching their idea to Tim Draper, the founders developed a prototype of their product and Zopim

From 2007 to 2009 the company was incubated by NUS Enterprise and based at the Prince George’s Park Incubator on campus. During this time, NUS Enterprise mentors and incubation managers helped them to refine their business strategies and secure their first round of equity investment.

In 2010, Zopim was amongst the first few incubatee companies to leverage upon NUS Enterprise’s first Leap Overseas initiative, which supports companies going overseas for business development. This allowed Zopim to connect to several business partners in the US, including its eventual acquirer, Zendesk.

Since its founding, the company has quickly grown to become one of the leading providers in its field. Over 130,000 websites currently use the technology, reaching 290M web visitors every month. In 2014, Zopim was acquired by US-based Zendesk for a reported USD $30M.
