COHANA: A COHort ANAlytics Engine

Modern Internet applications, such as online commercial websites and mobile game applications, normally generate a large volume of user behavioral data. Cohort analysis is a powerful data exploration technique for finding unusual user behavior trends from large activity datasets using the concept of cohort. However, one limitation of classical cohort analysis is that time is the only dimension which is used for identifying cohorts. In many other applications, there are other factors that determine the similarity of people’s behavior. To simplify performing cohort analysis for data analysts, we present a relational approach to model the user behavioral data and three database like operators for manipulating the data model, and provide several constructs for data analysts to compose cohort queries with SQL SELECT like statements.

Low Cost, Programmable Bare-Metal Network Virtualisation

Our technology (Bare-metal Network Virtualisation or BNV) acts as a controller to a set of SDN switches and provides a programmable slice of the network with maximum fidelity to the tenants. Our approach can support arbitrary topologies over the hardware switches without modifying the switch software and provides the ability to adapt tenant’s topologies at demand using fine grained analytics on network traffic.

CloseUp - Next Generation Q&A Platform For Live Crowdsourcing

Despite the seeming abundance of data available, the Web suffers from a blind spot when it comes to live and on-the-spot information. Question like “How noisy is it around that hotel right now?”, “Is there a long queue at this restaurant at the moment?”, or “Does this shop still sell its latest offer?” not only refer to specific points of interest but their answers are only valid for a short period of time. As a consequence, they cannot be found on any websites let alone be searched for using search engines like Google. Such question can often only be answered by people currently on site. Given the omnipresence of smartphones, people who are physically at or close to hotel, restaurant or shop can easily provide answers.

GeoVid: Capturing More Information In A Video

We can now easily capture and share videos using our smartphones and videos, but systematically cataloguing, managing and searching these videos can be difficult. GeoVid uses the other sensors in our devices to store metadata for better indexing and handling video collections.

STEVE Tool: Keeping It Cool

Good urban planning can help cool the air within a city by between 2°C to 8°C. NUS has developed the STEVE tool to enable city planners to design the urban environment in a way that reduces heat.

Wireless photodynamic therapy device

This is a light-emitting device that can be implanted near a tumour and powered wirelessly by a radiofrequency field. The light delivered by the device activates light-sensitive drugs (photodynamic therapy), destroying malignant cells with minimal side effects outside of the treatment region.

TMDs Quantum Dots

Our technology describes a bottom-up approach to produce TMDs quantum dots of consistent sizes (depending onthe TMDs, the sizes ranges between 3-10nm) and can produce rare TMDs or TMDs that do not exist in nature and therefore impossible to obtain from mineral ore top down production. We could also engineer atomic defects into the crystal lattice of the same TMDs QDs as part of the bottom up synthesis approach. Scalability can be up to hundreds of grams.

Dye for viability PCR

This is a dye that can selectively detect the cells that exhibit metabolic activity. Hence, it has the innate ability to detect inactivation under conditions that do not impact membrane permeability.

Soft Microtubular Sensors for Biomedical Applications

We developed a flexible, stretchable, wearable, and washable piezoresistive microtubular sensor that is highly sensitive to mechanical perturbations. Its tiny footprint is approximately a cross-section of a strand of hair, which is one of the smallest in the existing technologies. This enables users to apply the sensor almost indistinguishably, thereby improving compliance and comfort. Furthermore, the tubular structure allows conformability over 3D curvatures, which cannot be achieved with planar substrates.

Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death globally, and most of them involve blood clots that block the flow of blood within vessels. Researchers from NUS have identified a powerful and naturally occurring anti-coagulant that can prevent such occurrences more effectively.

Broadly Neutralizing Monoclonal Antibody against Influenza A H5Nx clades

Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (HPAI) virus H5N1 remains a serious threat to global health due to its unabated and widespread geographical circulation. WHO reported a high mortality rate of H5N1 infection – 59%. Although human cases remain sporadic, the absence of human herd immunity, the high lethality, and potential ability of HPAI H5N1 to gain efficient human transmissibility all point towards a potentially catastrophic pandemic.

Microfluidic Flexible Sensor: Flex It, Wear It, Sense It!

When it comes to developing sensors, most technologies are bulky, rigid and expensive to manufacture. A team from NUS Department of Biomedical Engineering aim to solve this problem, through its new liquid-based, microfluidic tactile sensor. Like other tactile sensors, this sensor is able to detect and measure a range of properties and translate the information to be analysed by a connected intelligent system. However, what makes it so unique is its advantages of being small, thin, highly-flexible and durable. The device is also simple and cost-effective to produce.

Hybrid Drones with Dual Flight Modes

Hybrid UAVs with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) abilities and fixed-wing cruise operating modes have potential applications in military and civilian operations, especially where there are severe constraints in their operating environment. The NUS UAV Research Group has recently developed an innovative and fully autonomous hybrid UAV platform with both VTOL and cruise operating functions.

Fuelling Up Vehicles With Bio-Butanol

There is an urgent need for a reliable, affordable and sustainable supply of fuel. One option is producing butanol, which is a type of alcohol that can be used as a transport fuel. NUS has developed two technological processes to produce bio-butanol more effectively.

Pack-A-Poncho

The NUS Division of Industrial Design has designed the Pack-a-Poncho. This is a novel poncho that quickly and easily folds into a compact package, through a drawstring and spring steel mechanism. The folded poncho can then be stored into a sling bag that is part of the one-piece design, to prevent loss of any accessories.

Energy Saving Desiccant Dehumidifier for Efficient Air Conditioning

NUS researchers have developed a dehumidifier that can be easily installed/retrofitted in the ducting, upstream of the air-handling unit (AHU) of a conventional central air-conditioning unit. The dehumidifier is a bank of tubes that is coated with a solid-desiccant on its external surface,. It realises quasi-isothermal dehumidification and regeneration processes (as opposed to adiabatic processes in conventional desiccant wheels) which makes the dehumidification/regeneration process highly efficient only requiring ultra-low grade heat for regeneration.

Reverse Osmosis Thin Film Composite Membranes with Enhanced Flux and Rejection

Thin film composite (TFC) membranes are commonly used in the reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) applications, with potential to be used pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) too. Based on a market report by Orian Research, the global RO membrane market is estimated to grow at CAGR of 10.1 % to reach USD 14.06 Billion in 2023. The latest trend gaining momentum in the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane market is intensifying R&D expenditure. Novel Shopping Trolley

A novel shopping trolley design which adopts a wheel-in-wheel mechanism is described. The wheel mechanism composes of a smaller inner wheel which is free to roll along the inner track of a bigger outer wheel. The trolley cart structure is connected to the inner wheels directly as in a normal trolley. The inner track of the outer wheel provides a smooth rolling path for the inner wheel to travel.
