New Yorkers will tell you it’s the greatest city in the world. It is in fact the most populous city in the United States, and one of the most culturally diverse and technologically-advanced in the world. With a tech sector that is continuing to mature, every turn in the city’s famous streets brings new opportunities and discovery for the aspiring entrepreneur. Well-known for its fintech, real estate and retail industries, New York is also fast becoming home to start-ups in the food tech, climate tech and AI, to name a few Students applying to NOC New York can expect a unique experience in the city that never sleeps. After all, why sleep if you can hack your way to a start-up in the greatest city on earth? Academic Details Expand The NOC New York (1-year) programme is credit bearing and students will receive up to 40 units. Financial Details Expand Students should expect to pay some amount out of their own pocket for the monthly expenses they would have incurred if they had remained in Singapore. This personal contribution, together with the monthly stipend should be sufficient to cover the estimated monthly cost of living overseas at about SGD2,800. Students continue to pay regular tuition fees to NUS for the duration of the programme, while programme costs will be borne by NOC. Personal expenditures are expected to vary, as it depends on the individual preferences and lifestyle. NUS Overseas Colleges will provide or cover the following: Tuition fees for approved entrepreneurship courses at the partner university (if applicable) Internship assessor appointed to supervise student on internship Start-up mentorship for student *NUS student travel insurance & iSOS Services Partial cost of visa application fee (Students are expecting to co-pay and if students' stipend received from host company is above a certain amount, students will have to pay the visa fees in full rate. More details will be provided during enrolment briefing) Basic medical checkup fee at UHC Note: If students withdraw from NOC before or during the programme, any incurred costs, NOC funding support and/or awards, or Singapore government financial support must be returned to NOC/NUS on a pro-rated basis, depending on the stage of withdrawal. Students need to pay: Your regular tuition and other miscellaneous fees to NUS Regular overseas living expenses Additional expenses incurred for personal/recreational activities Return trip air ticket to New York Partial visa fees Repeat or additional medical tests, consultations, medications, or other treatments at UHC *All NUS students travelling overseas for activities or purposes approved, endorsed, organized, sponsored or authorised by NUS will be covered by the NUS Student Travel Insurance Policy. To literally put you in my shoes, networking with industry professionals in skyscrapers overlooking Times Square and dining with bond traders who moved volumes equivalent to the GDPs of small countries daily was just another day in my life. HackHarvard, TartanHacks by CMU, HackRutgers – these were just some of the hackathons that we proudly took stage as winners. The bustling capital of the world offered me experiences that permanently altered my world view. There was truly nothing as exhilarating as moving in tandem with the pulse of the financial centre of the world. Working at the World Trade Centre for a startup for a year, I found myself continuously in new roles as the company evolved. At every stage it was a fresh challenge that broadened my horizons and allowed me to push myself further. Outside of work, the city is almost waiting for you to go explore; I got to try so many new cuisines, theaters, exhibitions, fairs, events - and yet after a year felt like I had only scratched the surface. This too is true for the buzzing entrepreneurial scene. Going hand in hand with the courses, I got to apply the knowledge I was learning in class and the experience I was gaining at work towards my own startup. Frankly, I think you would have to work really hard against it, to not leave New York without an entrepreneurial mindset. However, I am perhaps most grateful for the people I met along the way. Not only do you have overwhelmingly many opportunities to grow your network, but the friends I made, the relationships I built are what made leaving New York after NOC most difficult. Truly, NOC New York was an unforgettable experience that I do not think I can properly express my gratitude for.
