Current and Past Initiatives
‘Port Innovation Ecosystem Reimagined at BLOCK71’ (PIER71) is the entrepreneurial marina for the region’s maritime innovation. Founded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the National University of Singapore (NUS), through its entrepreneurial arm, NUS Enterprise, the programme aims to grow a dynamic innovation ecosystem by building talent, creating opportunities for exchange of ideas, attracting investments and accelerating ventures.

SIA Accelerator Programme
The SIA Accelerator Programme is a joint initiative by NUS Enterprise and Singapore Airlines (SIA), which aims to boost efficiencies and the customer experience within the travel sector, while simultaneously creating new business opportunities for innovative start-ups. The initiative brings together NUS Enterprise’s expertise and networks within Asia’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems, and SIA’s wealth of experience in the travel and aviation sector.
Singapore Airlines AppChallenge
Singapore Airlines’ annual AppChallenge, run in conjunction with joint initiative partner NUS Enterprise, is currently in its fifth year running and is one of the largest digital hackathons for aviation innovation.

Innovation Cybersecurity Ecosystem at Block71 (ICE71) is the region’s first cybersecurity entrepreneur hub. Based in Singapore, ICE71 is a partnership between Singtel Innov8, the venture capital arm of the Singtel Group, and the National University of Singapore (NUS), through its entrepreneurial arm NUS Enterprise. ICE71 is strengthening the region’s growing cybersecurity ecosystem by attracting and developing competencies and deep technologies to help mitigate the rapidly increasing cybersecurity risks in the region.
Supported by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) and Info-Communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), ICE71 runs a range of programmes designed to support cybersecurity individuals and start-ups from idea development to the creation, acceleration and scaling of cybersecurity start-ups. ICE71 Inspire and ICE71 Accelerate are run by CyLon, Europe’s leading cybersecurity accelerator and active investor in early stage cybersecurity start-ups. CyLon’s global cybersecurity network and expertise, combined with ICE71’s regional knowledge and ecosystem, provides entrepreneurs and start-ups with the support and go-to-market access required to scale a successful cybersecurity business in the region.

In 2019, Tencent and NUS jointly launched a cloud program to nurture support NUS affiliated startups through the services of Tencent Cloud.
Selected startups will benefit from cloud credits, technical support, solution, online and offline training with respect to Tencent Cloud products and services, marketing support and speaking opportunities at Tencent events, as well as access to Tencent’s ecosystem support.

Ocean of Opportunities (O3) Challenge
Together with NUS Enterprise and Ocean Network Express (ONE), in support by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, National Supercomputing Centre Singapore, Accenture and Cisco Systems, the O3 challenge seeks to reach out to collaborators and innovators to optimise shipping processes and develop new solutions.

Healthy Hearts, Healthy Asia Report
Bayer, in partnership with NUS Enterprise, launched the Healthy Hearts, Healthy Aging Asia Pacific Report at Innovfest Unbound 2019 to foster multi-stakeholder collaboration in embracing innovative therapies and technologies for long-term prevention of stroke, heart attacks and other serious cardiovascular events.
The report collates curated insights from experts across eight countries i.e. Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. In examining the cardiovascular health imperatives aligned with population aging in the Asia Pacific, the report calls for policy actions in the three areas of education, innovation and collaboration, in order to foster a much-needed shift towards preventive, value-based care.
Grants4Apps
In 2017, Bayer, with NUS Enterprise, launched an open innovation challenge in Singapore and across Asia Pacific to seek innovative solutions to improve medication adhernece in elders with chronic medical conditions. The challenge aims to develop apps, hardware and software technology to:
- Improve health outcomes
- Improve pharmaceutical processes
- Generate better patient outcomes
DSTA@71
DSTA@71 is a partnership between the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) with NUS Enterprise to seek new related technologies that could be used to enhance the defence for the nation.

Mundipharma Cancer Care Challenge
Mundipharma and NUS Enterprise launched the inaugural ‘Mundipharma Cancer Care Challenge’ in 2019 to seek game-changing ideas that use technology to solve problems that cancer patients and doctors face.
