Tech Start-Ups & Job Creation
Research findings by NUS Entrepreneurship Centre

Disruption and transformation are key in the current global economy, and start-ups are an important agent in the equation. To quote Professor Wong Poh Kam, Director of NUS Entrepreneurship Centre, “Start-ups are an important agent for disrupting existing businesses and seeding the emergence of new industries. While start-ups destroy some traditional jobs, they create new, high-value ones too.”

To find out the dynamics between growth and job creation of high-tech start-ups in Singapore, Professor Wong Poh Kam, Ho Yuen Ping and Crystal Ng of the NUS Entrepreneurship Centre, supported by the NRF SRIE grant, set out to study the industry, and presented some of their key findings during the recent Business Times Leaders’ Forum. They discovered a growing trend in high tech services but a downward trend in high tech manufacturing, and that start-ups that invest more in innovation, with focus on overseas and emerging markets, grow faster and are greater job creators, but require greater support with majority facing negative cashflow challenges. The Evolution of Innovation
First of the Kopi Chat Deep Dive Series

We kicked off our first ever Kopi Chat Deep Dive Series last month at Blk71, where we delved into the depths of the topic, "Big Data Intelligence: The Evolution of Innovation" with experts in the field. There was an overwhelming response for the inaugural Deep Dive event, which was simultaneously livestreamed to BLOCK71 Jakarta! Attendees had the opportunity to gain interesting insights from the panel of experts in the big data intelligence field, as well as check out innovation solutions from nine artificial intelligence and big data start-ups at the Start-Up Showcase. During the event, experts spoke about the nature of Big Data x Artificial Intelligence, what shifts in the landscape they expect to see in the next 10 years and many more.

For those who have missed the event, don't fret. We will be posting the video highlights and "Kopi Chat Da Bao" later on in April on our Facebook page as well as out newsletter. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to stay plugged in to the latest happenings at Blk71!
