Portable Eye Diagnostic Device

Market Opportunity

According to World Health Organization, Glaucoma is second most common cause of blindness and it afflicted about 5.7 million people globally in 2014. 40% of them diagnosed with Angle Closure Glaucoma (ACG) came from Asia. And the remaining suffered from Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG) were prevalent in Africa and Europe. While ACG can be treated if detected early, majority of them remain undetected especially in developing countries. This problem is compounded with the lack of accurate, portable, point of care screening for the disease.

Technology

We have developed the world’s first portable system for ACG and OAG diagnosis or other medical conditions related to retinal. This is achieved by providing a solution that combines smart phone optics and computing with a robust holder to captures image of the eye.

Stage of Development

TRL 3. Analytical and experimental critical function and/or characteristic proof of concept. The prototype has been tested with both anterior chamber angle and optic nerve images of up to 5 volunteers to demonstrate the quality equivalence in terms of field of view, resolution and magnification compared to the current standard.

Applications

  • Glaucoma (Open Angled and Closed Angled Glaucoma)
  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Other retinal and optic nerve diseases

Advantages

1. Portable and stand-alone device
2. Ease of Use by non-medical practitioner

Status

Available for licensing.
