Multi-Colour Upconversion Micro-Rods For Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Market Opportunity

According to The International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, counterfeiting is a $600 billion a year problem and the World Customs Organization estimates that 5% to 7% of all goods traded in the global market are counterfeit. Barcoding materials have attracted much attention for anti-counterfeiting applications. However, the high cost of material fabrication, low reaction yields, complex instrumentation set-up and high background noise have so far hindered a widespread use of this technology.
 

Technology

Lanthanide-doped upconversion materials may provide a solution for the above mentioned problems. This technology relates to materials with strong upconversion luminescence for instant decoding under 980nm laser. The multicolor micro-rods are dispersible in dimethyl sulfoxide solvent providing a transparent ink under ambient light conditions.

Security ink, encryption tags and analytical assays.
 

Advantages

1. Simple low cost process, easily scalable for mass production
2. Can be decoded by conventional optical microscopes with the appropriate light source
3. Colour of micro-rods are customizable into optical barcodes to suit end user needs
4. Reduced background noise for a clearer view of the spectrum
